The deadline arriving today

Monday, October 5 is the Texas voter-registration deadline for the November 3, 2026 general election, according to the secretary of state’s September 28 notice. A mailed registration application must carry an October 5 or earlier postmark. The notice recommends obtaining a manual postmark at a Postal Service retail counter when mailing near the deadline.

That guidance addresses the date stamped on an envelope. Dropping an application into a collection box is not the same as seeing a clerk apply a postmark, and the time an envelope is collected need not be the time automated processing marks it.

Three dates, three different decisions

The official calendar places early in-person voting from October 19 through October 30. It separately requires an application for a ballot by mail to be received by October 23. That application deadline is not satisfied simply by mailing the request on October 23.

Verify the registration before planning the ballot

Readers should use the state’s official voter resources or their county election office to check registration and the address on file. Eligibility for a mail ballot is a separate question from registration; the deadline table does not imply that every registered voter qualifies.

The practical distinction is between securing registration, choosing an available voting method and submitting the documents required for that method. This report covers Texas rules for this election, not a nationwide deadline. It does not predict turnout or describe a deadline extension that officials have not announced.
