A locally specific story finds a global audience

JOHANNESBURG — The Zulu-language drama The Polygamist has become an unexpected international hit, giving Netflix momentum for a new group of South African productions. Company executives told Reuters the June release remained in the platform's Top 10 in 62 countries for seven consecutive weeks and reached nearly 28 million views.

Netflix announced new seasons or sequels for Blood Legacy, Seriously Single Too and Another Disaster Holiday, along with Love is Blind: South Africa and the wedding docu-soap Stars & Vows. The announcement came as the service marked 10 years of operating in South Africa.

A dark mirror rather than a lovable hero

Based on a 2012 novel by Zimbabwean author Sue Nyathi, The Polygamist follows Jonasi Gomora, a banking executive who hides an ongoing marriage while cheating on his wife and fathering children with younger women. Its creators frame the story around family, patriarchy, polygamy and colonial disruption of traditional norms.

Actor S'dumo Mtshali told Reuters he did not want viewers to like Gomora and described the character as a dark reflection of leaders, bosses and relatives recognizable across societies. Executive producer and co-director Gugulethu Zuma-Ncube connected the global response to the combination of cultural specificity and broadly legible power dynamics.

One success can open a door, but not secure an industry

Netflix says it has aired more than 300 South African titles since 2016 and supported about 8,000 jobs through roughly 30 production companies. Those figures indicate scale, but sustainable growth also depends on recurring commissions, rights terms, training, ownership and whether workers can build careers between productions.

Limits and what to watch

Netflix's viewing figures are company-reported and platform-specific, chart success does not measure every viewer's response, and one hit does not guarantee durable investment across the national industry.

The next development to watch is audited or updated view data, release of the announced titles, employment continuity and future production commitments.
