The exhibition opens November 20

The Smithsonian's National Postal Museum says “American Stories, American Stamps” will open Friday, November 20, and remain on view through October 2029. The exhibition is presented in English and Spanish.

The museum describes stamps as small-scale visual storytelling. The show is timed to the United States' 250th anniversary, but an anniversary frame does not make every object a complete account of the history it represents.

Visitors will see the design process

The official announcement says the display will combine issued stamps with original artwork, preliminary sketches and both approved and rejected designs from the U.S. Postal Service's Postmaster General's Collection.

That comparison can show how a public image changes before release: which symbols survive, what text is added and which concepts are set aside. The museum says displays will rotate during the exhibition's run, so a visit on one date may not match a later one.

Check the museum before traveling

The announcement is a preview, not an independent review of the finished galleries. This newsroom has not inspected the installation or verified which objects will be on display on a particular day.

Visitors should confirm opening status, hours, accessibility and any security notices on the museum's official site. The accompanying photograph shows the venue in 2006 and does not show the 2026 exhibition.
