A summit about more than theaters
France and South Korea will convene the first Lumière Summit September 7 at Fondation Maeght in Saint-Paul-de-Vence. Presidents Emmanuel Macron and Lee Jae Myung are co-chairing an event expected to bring filmmakers, executives, technologists and officials from more than 30 countries.
The agenda treats cinema as part of a moving-image ecosystem including streaming, social platforms and games. Sessions will address AI, media literacy, preservation, sustainability, financing and the relationship between theatrical and home viewing.
Why France and South Korea are leading
France maintains strong public cultural policy and support for theatrical cinema. South Korea has built global influence through film, television and music while sustaining a distinct domestic industry. Their partnership brings policy weight and creative credibility.
AI may be the most contentious issue. Producers see new tools and possible savings, while writers, performers and craftspeople want consent, compensation and protection from unauthorized replication. Funding and audiences are equally concrete as theaters and independent producers compete for attention and capital.
What would count as a result
A prestigious gathering can focus attention, but declarations without deadlines or responsible institutions are hard to measure. Clear outcomes would include research plans, funding commitments, labor principles, preservation projects or published follow-up.
The summit's deeper value may be recognizing that cinema's future is not a choice between nostalgia and technology. The durable question is how tools, business models and policy can preserve authorship, access and shared viewing.
