The deadline and the price of waiting

SXSW lists Thursday, October 1, 2026, as the final deadline for its 2027 Film & TV Festival. Final-period application fees are $95 for a feature film and $70 for a short film, television project, music video or XR experience. The earlier September 15 price window has closed, so applicants should budget from the final table rather than an older announcement.

A paid entry purchases consideration. It does not purchase acceptance, travel, lodging, distribution or a favorable review. That sounds obvious, but it is the most important line in a deadline guide because sunk-cost pressure encourages filmmakers to submit a project before its rights and exhibition strategy are ready.

Choose the category by the work that exists

Runtime, episodic structure and intended presentation determine the correct category. A proof-of-concept short is still a short; calling it television does not make a series package complete. A music video requires the music and image rights to travel together. An XR entry must be judged as an experience, including the equipment and installation needed to present it.

Applicants should read the current category description and FAQ inside the application portal before paying. Festival definitions can differ from grant, guild or distributor definitions. If a project straddles categories, ask SXSW support in writing and retain the response with the submission record.

A rights audit that fits on one page

Music is a frequent weak point. A temporary track that works for private editing may not be cleared for a festival screening or promotional excerpt. Replacing it after selection can alter timing and create avoidable negotiations under deadline pressure.

  • List every song, archival clip, photograph, artwork, logo and third-party performance; record the owner, license scope, territory and term.
  • Confirm releases for principal performers and recognizable private locations, plus union or guild obligations when applicable.
  • Check that the uploaded cut matches the project title, runtime, captions and credits entered in the form.
  • Save the confirmation number, payment receipt, password and exact screeners supplied to the festival.

Premiere strategy belongs in the decision

Festivals use premiere status differently, and selection at one event can affect eligibility or marketing value at another. Before clicking submit, a producer should map already-public screenings, online availability and pending applications. The controlling document is SXSW's current rule set and the representations made in the application, not advice remembered from a prior year.

The final go/no-go test is concrete: Is the work in the right category, is the screener stable, are material rights controlled, can the team honor the festival's terms, and does SXSW fit the release plan? If any answer is unknown, use the remaining two weeks to resolve it. Meeting the deadline is useful only when the application protects the film that follows.
