What the award recognizes

The San Sebastián International Film Festival presented Naomi Watts with its Donostia Award on Saturday, September 19, honoring a screen career that moved from years of near-breakthroughs to David Lynch's Mulholland Drive, two Academy Award nominations and later work across independent film, studio drama and television.

The Donostia is an honorary career prize. It is not the Golden Shell awarded by the festival jury to a film in the official competition. Keeping the categories separate matters: Watts was being recognized for a body of work, not declared the winner of this year's film competition.

Her current film The Housewife, directed by Bruce Beresford, provided immediate festival context. The ceremony nevertheless looked across decades rather than functioning as an award for that single performance.

The career timeline complicates the idea of an overnight discovery

Watts was 32 when Mulholland Drive premiered in 2001 after a long stretch of auditions and smaller roles. Her performance as Betty Elms and Diane Selwyn used the same face to carry idealism, performance and collapse. Two years later, 21 Grams brought her first Oscar nomination; The Impossible brought a second in 2013.

David Lynch died in 2025, making Watts's discussion of his faith in her especially resonant. His casting changed her career, but an accurate retrospective should not erase the choices, performances and collaborations that followed it.

Ageism is testable beyond an acceptance speech

Watts used the festival platform to discuss the industry's narrowing expectations for women as they age. Variety reported her argument that women do not stop having complex inner lives after menopause. The point can be examined with more than applause: casting data can track lead roles, character age, budget, genre and whether stories center older women's own goals rather than using them only as relatives or symbols.

Her recent work offers a concrete counterexample to disappearance, but one successful actor does not prove the barrier is gone. Awards often celebrate exceptional longevity precisely because sustained access is uneven. The better measure is whether opportunity broadens across writers, directors, performers and budgets—not whether a few stars remain visible.

The same caution applies to a lifetime honor. Recognition can validate a career while leaving the production system that shaped it largely unchanged. A festival speech becomes consequential when programmers, financiers and distributors make different choices afterward.
