Three Bakersfield family members are identified
The Kern County coroner identified Vanessa Sue Wetmore, 41, and her daughters Kylie Wetmore, 20, and Kloie Wetmore, 16, as the three people killed in a fiery multi-vehicle crash on Highway 99 near Bakersfield.
The collision occurred near 7th Standard Road in the early morning hours of August 16. Their Honda Accord collided with a BMW and a Chevrolet Colorado and caught fire, according to published accounts citing investigators.
The BMW driver and a passenger were reported seriously injured, while two people in the Chevrolet suffered minor injuries. Those descriptions may change as medical and investigative records are updated.
The investigation is not complete
California Highway Patrol reporting identified a vehicle traveling the wrong way, but early accounts differed over details and did not provide a final determination of every driver’s actions.
No responsible conclusion about alcohol, drugs or criminal fault should be drawn without official findings. A wrong-way crash can involve impairment, confusion, roadway access or other causes, and investigators must evaluate physical evidence and witness information.
The family was reportedly returning from a Fresno concert connected to Kloie’s birthday. That personal context explains the community’s grief but does not determine the mechanics of the collision.
