Bakersfield Man, 68, Killed in Panama Road Crash; McFarland Driver Hurt

CHP confirms one death and one injury

ARVIN, Calif. — A 68-year-old Bakersfield man was killed and a 64-year-old McFarland man suffered minor injuries Thursday morning in a two-vehicle collision at Panama Road and Tejon Highway north of Arvin, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash was reported at approximately 4:48 a.m. CHP said the Bakersfield man sustained major injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The McFarland man was taken to Kern Medical for treatment of minor injuries.

Preliminary account describes the vehicles and intersection

CHP’s preliminary account says the Bakersfield man was driving a 2001 Honda Civic east on Panama Road, west of Tejon Highway, at an unknown speed. The McFarland man was driving a 2007 Toyota Tacoma south on Tejon Highway at approximately 60 mph.

Eastbound and westbound Panama Road traffic is controlled by stop signs at the intersection, while northbound and southbound Tejon Highway traffic is not, according to CHP. The agency said that, for reasons still under investigation, the Honda continued east through the intersection and collided with the Toyota.

That description does not establish that the Honda driver intentionally disregarded a stop sign, determine whether the vehicle stopped before entering the intersection or resolve every circumstance leading to the collision.

Road reopened; investigators seek information

Panama Road and Tejon Highway reopened after a closure of approximately 90 minutes. The reopening ended the immediate traffic disruption but did not end the investigation.

CHP asks anyone with information about the crash to contact its Bakersfield Area office at 661-396-6600. People who passed through the area around 4:48 a.m. should preserve original dash-camera footage and provide it directly to investigators rather than posting edited clips or unverified conclusions online.
