Teenager recovered after drowning at Lake Ming
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — A 16-year-old boy drowned at Lake Ming on Tuesday afternoon, the Kern County Sheriff’s Office confirmed in an updated report from 23ABC.
Sheriff’s officials said the teenager went underwater at approximately 4:50 p.m. Search-and-rescue crews found him at about 7 p.m., following an hours-long response at the lake northeast of Bakersfield.

Several people tried to save him
Four to five people jumped into the lake after the boy went under and attempted to rescue him, according to the Sheriff’s Office. They were unable to locate him in the water.
The teenager’s name had not been released as of Tuesday night. Authorities have not provided additional information about what happened before he went underwater.

Swimming is prohibited at Lake Ming
Lake Ming is a 104-acre recreational lake in Kern River County Park, about 10 miles northeast of Bakersfield. The county allows boating, water skiing and shoreline fishing under posted rules.
Kern County’s official facility information states that swimming and inflatables are prohibited in the lake. Officials have not said whether that rule or any other factor played a role in Tuesday’s drowning.

Investigation remains active
The Kern County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the drowning. The Coroner’s Office is expected to release the teenager’s identity after relatives are notified and complete its determination of the cause and manner of death.
