Woman dies after firefighters pull her from smoke-filled home
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — A woman rescued unconscious from a burning East Bakersfield home late Thursday died Friday at Kern Medical, 23ABC reported Saturday. Her identity has not been released in the reviewed reports.
The fatal outcome is a material update to the initial rescue account. BakersfieldNow independently reported the fire and rescue details Friday, but its report did not include the woman’s later death. No public coroner identification or finding on her cause and manner of death was located for this report.
Crews cut through locked gates and a locked door
The Kern County Fire Department was dispatched at approximately 9:51 p.m. September 17 to the 1300 block of Ralston Street, according to both local reports. Bakersfield Fire Department crews assisted after responders arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the home and neighbors said a woman was trapped inside.
Firefighters encountered locked gates and a locked front door. Using a rotary saw and hand tools, crews forced entry, searched the smoke-filled house and found the woman unconscious. The Fire Department account reported by both outlets said the rescue was completed about two minutes after the incident commander arrived and approximately eight minutes after dispatch.
She regained consciousness before hospital transport
Firefighters brought the woman outside, administered oxygen and provided medical treatment. The two reports say she regained consciousness before Hall Ambulance transported her to Kern Medical.
23ABC reported that she died September 18. The outlet did not report a public statement from the coroner, a medical cause of death or the time of death. What’s the Scoop With Broach therefore attributes the death to that report and does not make a medical determination.
Fire began in a rear bedroom; cause remains under investigation
Crews located the fire in a rear bedroom and contained it, according to the Fire Department account carried by both stations. No other occupants were found inside the home.
Investigators have not announced what started the fire. The reviewed reports also do not establish whether smoke alarms were present or operating, provide a damage estimate, or report injuries to firefighters. Any claim assigning a cause or fault would go beyond the available evidence.
What remains unconfirmed
The woman’s name, age and relationship to the property have not been publicly confirmed in the reviewed reporting. A coroner identification, cause and manner of death, and any toxicology findings also remain unavailable.
