CALIFORNIA CITY, Calif. — Kern County prosecutors have charged Umar Faheem Waldron with first-degree murder in the death of James Craig Turner, a California City resident who was reported missing in August.
The Kern County District Attorney’s Office says the alleged killing occurred between August 7 and August 8. A criminal complaint is an accusation, not proof of guilt, and no conviction or final factual finding has been announced.
The public statements reviewed for this report do not disclose the alleged location or cause of Turner’s death, a claimed motive, the relationship between the two men or the evidence prosecutors believe connects Waldron to the case.
Turner was last seen in California City
The California Department of Justice missing-person record says Turner’s last known contact was August 7. The reporting agency was the California City Police Department, which listed the matter under case number CR26-0677.
Authorities issued a Silver Alert after Turner was last seen around 7 a.m. in California City, according to the California Highway Patrol account reported by BakersfieldNow. The state record identified a silver 2013 Kia Sportage associated with the missing-person case.
The state page confirms the date Turner disappeared and the agency handling the report. It does not explain what happened after his last contact or establish the circumstances of his death.
Waldron was arrested in Las Vegas and returned to Kern County
The District Attorney’s Office says Waldron was located in Las Vegas on August 18, taken into custody and later extradited to Kern County.
Prosecutors described the inquiry as a complex initial investigation led by their office and the California City Police Department. They credited assistance from the Lancaster Police Department, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Bakersfield Police Department, FBI, California Highway Patrol and Kern Regional Crime Laboratory.
Participation by several agencies shows the investigation crossed jurisdictions. It does not reveal which evidence each agency collected, whether Turner was found in California or Nevada, or what prosecutors intend to present in court.
The complaint includes additional allegations
Prosecutors filed the first-degree murder charge on September 8. The complaint also alleges that Waldron has a prior strike conviction for attempted murder in Los Angeles County, previously served a prison term, committed a crime involving great violence and targeted a particularly vulnerable victim, according to the District Attorney’s announcement reported by BakersfieldNow.
Those claims are sentencing-related allegations attached to the prosecution’s complaint. They have not been established by a verdict in this case, and the existence of an alleged prior conviction does not prove the current murder charge.
No plea, arraignment outcome, preliminary-hearing finding or trial date was confirmed in the public material reviewed for this report. Waldron is entitled to the presumption of innocence unless the charge is proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
