BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The California Highway Patrol is seeking the driver of a 2017 Toyota Camry after a fatal hit-and-run killed 35-year-old Pablo Pizano Ortiz on Fairfax Road early Saturday, according to an agency account reported Tuesday by BakersfieldNow.

CHP said officers were called at approximately 12:23 a.m. September 5 to Fairfax Road at Paola Avenue for a crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian. Its preliminary investigation places the southbound Camry on Fairfax Road south of Pictoria Drive before it struck Ortiz.

The driver ran from the crash and abandoned the Camry at the northwest corner of Franklin Avenue and Lynwood Avenue, CHP said. No driver description, name or arrest was announced in the reviewed report.

Relatives say he was walking home

Ortiz's sister, Rocelia Ruiz, told BakersfieldNow that her brother had been walking home from a family member's house late Friday. She said Ortiz suffered a brain injury after an attack when he was 18 and that family members regularly tried to look after him.

Relatives said Ortiz would have turned 36 next month. Their statements describe the person they lost and the circumstances they are trying to understand; they are not a substitute for a collision reconstruction or a formal cause-and-manner finding.

What investigators and witnesses can establish

A complete investigation should establish the precise impact location, the path between Pictoria and Paola avenues, available surveillance or dash-camera footage, debris or paint transfer, the vehicle's direction of travel and the medical cause and manner of Ortiz's death.

Anyone who traveled Fairfax Road or the Franklin Avenue and Lynwood Avenue area early Saturday and has original video or firsthand information should preserve the unedited file, its timestamp and device metadata and provide it directly to law enforcement.
