Woman pronounced dead after Sunday-night collision

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — A woman was killed Sunday night after a vehicle struck her in the 2500 block of South Union Avenue and left the scene, according to a Bakersfield Police Department account reported Monday by BakersfieldNow.

BPD said officers were dispatched at approximately 7:31 p.m. September 6. Officers found the woman suffering from severe injuries, and the Bakersfield Fire Department pronounced her dead at the scene.

The woman had not been publicly identified in the reporting reviewed by What’s the Scoop With Broach. Her name should not be circulated without confirmation that family-notification procedures have been completed.

Police say video led officers to a white Ford pickup

BPD's preliminary investigation found that the woman was crossing South Union Avenue outside a marked crosswalk when a northbound vehicle struck her. That sequence is a preliminary police account, not a final collision reconstruction.

Police said video footage showed a white Ford pickup believed to have been involved. Officers located the pickup at a residence in the 3600 block of Cottonwood Road and contacted 36-year-old Guadalupe Hernandez there.

According to BPD's account, Hernandez admitted that he had been the driver and sole occupant of the Ford at the time of the collision. That statement is attributed to police; no recorded interview, signed statement or court filing was available in the reviewed reporting.

Arrest is not a conviction

Police arrested Hernandez and booked him on allegations that include hit-and-run causing death. A booking records an arrest and suspected offense; it does not establish guilt, and Hernandez is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
