Detectives release a new vehicle-information appeal

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The Kern County Sheriff's Office is asking the public for information about people who were inside a dark gray or black four-door sedan that detectives say left the scene of a May double homicide in east Bakersfield.

According to a KCSO account reported September 7 by BakersfieldNow, detectives learned during the investigation that the sedan left the property after the shooting. The reviewed public appeal does not provide a make, model, license plate, travel direction or exact departure time.

Investigators are seeking information about the occupants. The appeal does not say authorities have identified them, obtained an arrest warrant or determined publicly that every person in the car committed a crime.

Two men were found dead May 25

KCSO said deputies responded to the 5700 block of Eucalyptus Drive at approximately 10:15 p.m. May 25 after receiving a report of two shooting victims. Deputies found two men dead on the property, and homicide detectives assumed the investigation.

The Kern County Coroner's Office identified one of the men as 61-year-old Bakersfield resident Marcelino Rodriguez. The second man's identity was not included in the official accounts and local reporting reviewed for this update.

Authorities have not publicly announced a motive, named a suspect, described the relationship between the two victims or reported an arrest in the case. Those unknowns must not be filled with neighborhood rumor or online speculation.

A vehicle's departure is evidence—not a guilt finding

A sedan leaving the property after the shooting may be important to reconstructing the timeline. It does not, by itself, establish that its occupants were the shooters, accomplices or even aware that a crime occurred.

KCSO's request is an investigative appeal, not a public accusation against a named person. Residents should not confront, follow or publicly identify someone merely because they own a similar-looking car.

Photographs released with the appeal should be treated as investigative reference material. Color descriptions can vary with lighting, cameras and display settings, and the absence of a published plate or model limits responsible identification.

Two men were killed, and the case remains unresolved publicly. Investigators should release additional vehicle details when doing so will not compromise the case, and the public should provide evidence without turning an information request into a presumption of guilt.
