A new public-sector partnership
Kern County Superintendent of Schools Food and Nutrition Services is beginning a new role this fall: operating dining services at CSU Bakersfield.
The partnership developed after Aramark, CSUB’s former food-service contractor, decided to end its agreement early. CSUB then approached KCSOS about creating a public-sector alternative.
KCSOS says the operation is designed to cover its costs rather than generate a profit. Runner Market, formerly Runner Cafe, is reopening with Mexican, Italian and globally inspired food.
New food options and student jobs
Additional concepts planned for later in the fall include Tare & Taste, Cafecito & Bakery and World in a Bowl. Smart vending machines will provide fresh refrigerated meals outside normal dining hours.
The program will also serve CSUB Antelope Valley, provide concessions at athletic events and create employment opportunities for university students.
Some employees who previously worked for CSUB’s private dining contractors have joined the KCSOS team, preserving valuable institutional experience.

The partnership tests whether two public institutions can provide affordable campus food without building private profit into every meal.
Students should watch pricing, nutritional quality, worker conditions and whether promised locally sourced ingredients appear consistently.
