BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Kern County District Attorney Cynthia Zimmer publicly identified the 15-year-old accused in the Independence High School football-game shooting as Gabriel Torres Reyes. A juvenile-court judge ordered Reyes to remain detained after he denied the charges and allegations, the juvenile-court equivalent of entering a not-guilty plea.

Prosecutors have charged Reyes with premeditated first-degree murder and filed a gang enhancement and an allegation that he personally used a firearm causing Levi Brown’s death. LATEST UPDATE: KHSD adopts districtwide stadium security rules

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The Kern High School District announced enhanced security measures Wednesday evening for athletic contests at its stadiums, marking the district’s first major public policy response following the fatal August 21 shooting at Independence High School.

KHSD said it will increase security and law-enforcement personnel at events. All high school students must present a valid school-issued ID, while students who are not yet in high school must be accompanied and supervised by an adult.

UPDATE: Hundreds of students walk out and demand districtwide changes

Hundreds of Independence High School students staged a walkout Tuesday, August 25, after the fatal shooting at the school’s August 21 football game. Students who organized the demonstration said the shooting left classmates traumatized and made immediate security changes necessary.

The students are asking the Kern High School District to consider metal detectors, stronger screening procedures at school events and more highly trained officers on campuses. Organizers said their demands are directed at district leadership and should apply across all KHSD high schools—not only Independence.

UPDATE: Six arrests in effort to prevent retaliatory violence

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Bakersfield police say six alleged gang members were arrested in two separate operations after investigators developed information that they may have been preparing retaliatory acts of violence following the deadly shooting at Independence High School.

The six arrests are separate from the earlier arrest of a 15-year-old boy suspected of killing 17-year-old Levi Jermaine Carter Brown at the August 21 football game. Police have not accused the six people named in the follow-up operations of participating in Brown’s killing.

On Saturday night, officers assigned to the department’s Special Enforcement Unit arrested 18-year-old Jaheim Leverett and two 15-year-olds. Police said officers found a gun, face coverings and gloves during that operation.

Early Monday morning, officers stopped a vehicle occupied by 18-year-old Adam Porras, 18-year-old Sean Reyes and a 17-year-old juvenile. Investigators said they recovered two additional guns along with masks and gloves.

BPD described all six as known gang members and said the circumstances and information developed during the investigations led detectives to believe they may have been preparing retaliation connected to an ongoing gang conflict. UPDATE: Victim identified as Levi Jermaine Carter Brown

The Kern County Coroner’s Office has officially identified the teenager killed during Friday night’s football game at Independence High School as Levi Jermaine Carter Brown, 17, of Bakersfield.

The Times reported that school officials confirmed Brown did not attend Independence High School. His death occurred at the campus during the school’s season-opening football game against Centennial High School.

Brown was remembered by a former coach as a gifted football player with significant potential. The Times also reported that he is survived by a one-year-old daughter.

Bakersfield police announced Saturday, August 22, that a 15-year-old boy had been arrested in connection with Brown’s death.

Police initially arrested the juvenile on suspicion of murder and participation in a criminal street gang. At an August 26 detention hearing, prosecutors detailed a first-degree murder charge with special circumstances, a gang enhancement, a personal-firearm-use allegation, prohibited firearm possession and a probation violation. A Friday night football game ends in tragedy

A 17-year-old boy was shot and killed Friday night at Independence High School in southwest Bakersfield, interrupting a football game against Centennial High School and leaving families across Kern County confronting the reality of deadly violence at a community event.
