What Caltrans actually scheduled
Caltrans District 9's advisory for September 28 through October 2 identifies one new eastern Kern impact: utility work on State Route 202 near Tehachapi. Crews plan to close the shoulders between the eastern intersection of Cummings Valley Road and Schout Road on Tuesday, September 29, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The advisory does not describe a full closure, a detour or one-way traffic control for this Kern County job. Drivers should therefore expect activity at the road edge rather than assume SR 202 will be inaccessible.
Why a weekly notice is not a guarantee
Caltrans says schedules can change because of traffic incidents, weather, equipment or material availability, and construction conditions. A weekly advisory is a planning document; it is not a live map of an incident that develops Tuesday morning.
Before leaving, drivers can check QuickMap for active lane closures and call the statewide highway-condition line at 1-800-427-7623. People towing trailers or using oversized vehicles should verify current restrictions rather than infer clearance from the absence of a full closure in the weekly bulletin.
Separate the Kern item from nearby counties
The same District 9 notice includes work in Inyo and Mono counties, including one-way controls with estimated five- or ten-minute delays. Those entries do not apply to the SR 202 shoulder work in Kern County. Grouping every listed delay under a Tehachapi headline would overstate the local impact.
The practical plan is simple: allow room for workers, avoid using the shoulder as a passing or stopping lane, and recheck the live map shortly before travel.
