Bakersfield Students Get a Districtwide Introduction to Music Education

Music reaches every elementary campus

Students across the Bakersfield City School District are experiencing live performances during the district’s Music in Our Schools Week.

The program runs from August 17 through August 27 and includes assemblies at every district elementary school. Eleven elementary music teachers are participating, introducing students to different instruments, rhythms and musical styles.

This year’s program uses a K-pop theme while also incorporating recognizable music from entertainment properties including “The Legend of Zelda” and “Harry Potter.” Mariachi music is also represented.

Why arts access matters

The assemblies are designed to do more than entertain. District educators hope they will encourage students to participate in school music programs and help them understand how instruments and performers work together.

Music education can improve collaboration, discipline, confidence and creative expression. District coordinator Michael Stone also said BCSD’s own data show relationships between music participation, attendance and academic performance.

At a time when arts programs are frequently treated as optional, Bakersfield educators are demonstrating why they deserve a permanent place in public education. Every child should have opportunities to create and perform—not only students whose families can afford private lessons.
