Three first-place projects advance
Three Kern County students are among the Top 300 Junior Innovators in the 2026 Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge, the Kern County Superintendent of Schools announced September 10. They were selected from nearly 2,000 applicants representing 47 states and five territories. All three qualified through first-place projects at the Kern County Regional Science Fair.
The national recognition is an intermediate result, not the final award. Society for Science is scheduled to reduce the field from 300 to 30 finalists on September 16. More than $100,000 in awards are available, including a $25,000 ASCEND Award, but none of the three should be described as having won that money unless the next announcement says so.
A brain-injury model using fruit flies
Alekha Goldberg of Peak to Peak Mountain Charter School studied methylene blue as a possible neuroprotectant after traumatic brain injury using an in-vivo Drosophila model. Fruit flies can help researchers examine biological mechanisms quickly and consistently. A student model can reveal a promising signal without proving that a drug is safe or effective for people.
That boundary is part of good science communication. The project's strength is the testable question and model; its result should be judged through methods, controls, sample size and replication. Readers should not turn a youth research title into personal medical advice or a claim about an approved treatment.
Water conservation and Bakersfield heat
Saanvi Narwal of Earl Warren Junior High School examined hydrogel-enhanced soil as a strategy for agricultural water conservation. The local relevance is immediate in an irrigated farming region, but practical adoption would require comparing water retention, plant response, cost, degradation and environmental effects under field conditions—not just one favorable measure.
Benson Kim of Ronald Reagan Elementary School used time-to-burn regressions and passive mitigation ideas to study Bakersfield's urban heat islands. EPA guidance identifies shade, reflective materials, trees and green infrastructure among possible interventions. A local model can help identify patterns; citywide policy still needs neighborhood measurements, equity analysis, maintenance costs and long-term temperature data.
A useful comparison, not a ranking
The three projects share a structure: define a problem, select a measurable outcome and test an intervention or relationship. They differ in scale. Goldberg's work uses an organism model, Narwal's examines a material-soil system and Kim's analyzes an urban environment. Comparing those methods is more informative than trying to rank brain injury, water scarcity and heat as causes.
