BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Kern Behavioral Health & Recovery Services is holding a 988 Day Resource Fair and Blood Drive on Tuesday, September 8, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Beale Memorial Library, 701 Truxtun Avenue in downtown Bakersfield.
The county agency says KernBHRS staff and partner providers will offer free suicide-prevention information, community resources, educational activities and remembrance activities for families. Houchin Community Blood Bank is scheduled to collect blood donations during the same four-hour window.
Admission to the resource fair is free. The reviewed announcement does not say that an appointment is required, publish a final list of participating providers or guarantee that every activity will remain available throughout the event. Visitors who are traveling specifically to donate should confirm current donor requirements before arriving.

A fair ticket is tied to a blood donation—not simply attendance
KernBHRS says Houchin will provide a free Kern County Fair ticket for each blood donation. The incentive is described as part of the blood drive, not as a giveaway to every person who attends the resource fair.
The announcement does not state how many tickets are available, whether an attempted donation that cannot be completed qualifies or whether any age or identification rules apply beyond Houchin's normal donor screening. Those details should be verified with the blood bank rather than assumed from a social post.
The 2026 Kern County Fair runs September 23 through October 4. A fair admission ticket does not automatically include parking, carnival rides or separately ticketed PRCA rodeo admission, so recipients should review the organizer's current terms before planning a visit.

Why the date is called 988 Day
September 8 is observed nationally as 988 Day because the date mirrors the three-digit 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration describes it as a day of action intended to increase awareness and understanding of the service.
The 988 Lifeline says people can call, text or chat at any time for free, confidential support with suicidal thoughts, emotional distress, mental-health struggles, substance use or other difficult moments. A person does not need to be suicidal to contact the service.
In Spanish, callers can dial 988 and press 2, and texters can send AYUDA to 988. The Lifeline also publishes access options for veterans and people who are deaf or hard of hearing. These services operate around the clock and do not depend on attendance at Tuesday's event.
The fair cannot replace help during an immediate crisis
A one-day resource fair can make services easier to find, but someone in distress should not wait until Tuesday. Call or text 988 now, or use the official chat at 988lifeline.org, to reach a crisis counselor. If someone is in immediate physical danger, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.
Public awareness is valuable only when it leads to care people can actually reach. Kern County agencies and providers should follow the event with clear information about hours, language access, transportation, cost, eligibility and what residents can expect after the first contact.
