Lamont’s Resource Fair Is a Starting Point—Here Is What Child Support Services Can and Cannot Do

Kern County Child Support Services says it will staff a booth at the Lamont Community Resource Fair today, September 17, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The free event is at Rancho Lindo Community Center, 9023 Camino La Jolla. The county's notice invites families to ask about its services; it does not promise that a court order will be opened, changed or enforced during the 90-minute fair.

That makes preparation useful. A booth conversation can identify the right process, surface missing information and point a parent to an appointment or online form. It is best treated as navigation, not a replacement courthouse or confidential case conference.

Bring enough detail to get a specific answer

Suggested materials—not a published admission requirement—include a photo ID, child-support case number, copies of current orders, a recent payment record and any notice that prompted the question. Someone asking about a possible modification should know what changed: income, job status, custody schedule, health coverage or another material circumstance. Keep Social Security numbers and original vital records secured unless an authorized worker specifically requests them through an official process.

A written, one-sentence goal helps: 'I need to enroll in services,' 'I cannot see a payment,' 'my income changed,' or 'I need to understand an enforcement notice.' Add the best phone number and email for follow-up. That small file lets staff distinguish a case-information problem from a new-service request before the event ends.

The agency’s lane has boundaries

California says local child-support agencies can establish legal parentage, seek child and medical-support orders, collect and track payments, and request changes when an order qualifies. Either parent or a legal guardian may enroll. The agency does not represent either side as a private lawyer, even when it is helping move a case through the system.

The same state guide says child-support offices do not decide custody or visitation, handle divorces, obtain restraining orders or establish spousal support. A parent whose central problem is parenting time, domestic violence or dissolution should ask for the correct court, legal-aid or safety referral rather than expect the support booth to rule on it.

If the fair is not enough

The event's value is access: Lamont families can make face-to-face contact after ordinary work hours. Clear expectations and a compact record packet turn that access into a next step without overstating what a community fair can legally resolve.
