Demand is 4.8 times the call budget

The European Commission received 67 applications requesting €2.88 billion for cross-border energy infrastructure under the 2026 Connecting Europe Facility Energy call, the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency announced October 26.

The call has €600 million available. Dividing requests by the budget yields 4.8 times demand; viewed the other way, the ceiling could cover 20.8% of the amount requested if every proposal were eligible and funded at its full request.

Applications span more than 20 countries

The proposals cover more than 20 countries and are tied to Projects of Common Interest within the EU or Projects of Mutual Interest linking the EU and neighboring non-EU countries. Applicants had until September 30 to submit.

The €43 million average is only the total request divided by 67. Individual projects may be far above or below it, and an average does not reveal project quality, technology or geography.

No winners have been selected

Officials will first check admissibility and eligibility, then use external experts, Commission staff and CINEA in evaluation. Applicants are expected to learn results in January 2027, with grant agreements planned by July 2027.

The oversubscription does not mean 79.2% of applicants will be rejected. Awards can be partial and applications vary in size; the 20.8% figure is a funding-amount ratio, not a project-count forecast.

Method, context and limits

What’s the Scoop With Broach divided €2.88 billion by €600 million and by 67 applications, then checked the call schedule against the EU funding page. This is document-based international news analysis, not reporting from a project site and not an investigation.

Since 2014, CEF Energy has supported 221 actions with €8.87 billion across 168 projects. That history gives scale but does not predict which 2026 applicants will receive money.
