Fact Check: Does This Video Show a New August Protest in Greece? No—It Is From 2025

The claim and verdict

CLAIM: A widely shared aerial video shows a huge anti-government protest in Greece in late August 2026.

VERDICT: FALSE CONTEXT. Reuters traced the footage to a February 28, 2025 demonstration in Thessaloniki marking the second anniversary of the Tempi train collision. The clip is real, but the new caption changes its date and therefore what it can prove.

Video creator Alexandros Litsardakis confirmed the time and place to Reuters. Contemporary versions and the anniversary context predate the claimed 2026 protest by roughly 18 months.

What the original protest was about

The February 2025 demonstration was part of nationwide remembrance and accountability protests two years after the February 28, 2023 Tempi rail disaster, which killed 57 people. Public anger centered on rail safety, responsibility and the pace of accountability.

That history explains why the crowd was large and why old footage remained emotionally powerful. It does not make the recaption accurate. An authentic image becomes misinformation when a new description assigns it to a different event.

Reuters found no credible reporting supporting the specific claim that this footage documented a late-August demonstration. Absence of that evidence, combined with the identifiable earlier upload, resolves the narrow question.

How to check recycled protest footage

Search for the earliest upload, compare landmarks and weather, and look for reporting published close to the original date. A creator's account can help, but independent visual matches and archived posts make the conclusion stronger.

The correction should remain narrow: the viral caption is wrong. It would be equally inaccurate to leap from that finding to a claim that no protests occurred in Greece in 2026.
