Verdict: Miscaptioned
A graphic video circulating with claims that it shows a migrant in Ceuta was not filmed in the Spanish enclave. Reuters matched the street scene to Cape Town, South Africa, about 8,000 kilometers away.
The footage shows a man biting a rodent's leg, but the visual itself does not identify him. Posts added the Ceuta location and an immigration narrative that the available image does not contain.
Reuters found the clip in licensing-agency collections dated February 1, 2024, with an account that it was recorded January 5. That timeline also undercuts attempts to present it as evidence of a new 2026 episode.
The location can be tested visually
Geolocation relies on persistent details: building shapes, storefront placement, curbs, road markings, terrain and the relative position of objects. Reuters compared those elements with Google Street View and found a Cape Town match.
That method is stronger than guessing from a person's appearance. Architecture and mapped infrastructure can be independently checked, while clothing, skin tone or a poster's description cannot reliably establish citizenship or migration status.
Ceuta and Cape Town are not ambiguous neighboring locations. Once the background is matched in South Africa, the central claim fails even if the footage itself remains disturbing.
What remains unknown
Nothing in the verified record establishes who the man is or why he acted as shown. Assigning him a nationality, religion or legal status would go beyond the evidence and risk turning an unidentified vulnerable person into a political symbol.
Users should pause before sharing humiliating footage, especially when a caption targets a group. A reverse-image search, keyframe search or street comparison can expose recycled material, but ethical judgment still matters after a location is found.
The featured Cape Town panorama is an authentic reusable photograph that establishes the verified city. It does not show the street, person or incident in the viral clip and is labeled as a file image.
