Kirkwood controls a difficult street race
Kyle Kirkwood won the inaugural Freedom 250 Grand Prix in Washington on Sunday after leading 128 of 147 laps around a temporary 1.7-mile circuit near the National Mall.
He finished 3.09 seconds ahead of Christian Lundgaard, with Will Power third. The victory was Kirkwood’s second of the season and gave Andretti Global a high-profile result at a new event.
The race included six caution periods and several incidents. Temporary street circuits offer limited runoff, changing surfaces and narrow passing zones that punish small errors.
A difficult day for the championship leader
Championship leader Alex Palou received a drive-through penalty and later crashed, finishing 20th. The result reduced the gap between Palou and rivals without erasing the points he built earlier in the season.
