Caltrans removes the southbound fire restriction
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Caltrans removed the southbound Interstate 5 restriction at Grapevine Road before midnight Monday, marking a major improvement after the Rose Fire forced an earlier closure and then reduced traffic to two lanes.
The state's 11:58 p.m. highway-conditions report no longer listed a southbound restriction in the Kern County corridor. The same report continued to list northbound traffic reduced to one lane because of a separate semitrailer collision.
Southbound drivers should still expect residual congestion and check Caltrans QuickMap immediately before leaving. The separate high-wind advisory through the Grapevine remained active even after the fire-related lane restriction disappeared.

Rose Fire stops growing at 25 acres as southbound lanes reopen
The Rose Fire began at 5:46 p.m. near I-5 and Grapevine, according to the state's official incident page. Kern County Fire Department has jurisdiction, and the cause remains under investigation.
CAL FIRE's incident page said firefighters stopped the blaze's forward progress at 25 acres at 6:27 p.m. Air tankers had been released earlier as crews reported making progress.
Stopping forward progress means the active edge is no longer advancing under the conditions at that time. It does not mean the fire is fully contained, extinguished or safe to approach. Reopening the roadway also does not cancel the separate wind warning.

Northbound collision restriction is removed
A separate collision involving at least two semitrailers was reported on northbound I-5 at approximately 7:08 p.m., according to CHP information reported by BakersfieldNow. At least one of the vehicles caught fire.
Produce spilled onto the roadway near Grapevine Road. Caltrans' 9:32 p.m. conditions report said northbound traffic was reduced to one lane, confirming a major bottleneck for travelers through the same corridor.
By 3:57 a.m. Tuesday, Caltrans no longer listed the northbound collision restriction. The change indicates the agency had removed the lane-reduction notice after cleanup, although the cause of the crash and verified injury information were still not included in the public notices reviewed.
A high-wind advisory adds another travel hazard
Caltrans separately posted a high-wind advisory for the Grapevine from the Los Angeles–Kern county line to about five miles south of the Highway 99 junction. Travel is not recommended there for campers, trailers or permit loads while the advisory remains active.
Wind can push smoke across lanes, reduce visibility and complicate firefighting even where pavement remains open. Drivers who encounter smoke should slow gradually, increase following distance, keep headlights on and obey officers and traffic-control workers rather than attempting to drive around a closure.
Anyone pulling a trailer or driving a high-profile vehicle should give the wind warning independent weight. A reopened lane would not automatically cancel the separate advisory, so both the closure notice and travel warning need to be checked.

What drivers should do before using the Grapevine
Caltrans QuickMap provides traffic speeds, closure markers and roadway cameras. The state's telephone road-information line is 1-800-427-7623. A passenger can check conditions during a trip; drivers should not handle a phone while moving.
Caltrans has not prescribed one universal detour in the notice. Navigation applications may recommend routes with limited services, narrow roads or their own hazards, so motorists should compare any suggested diversion with official closures and their vehicle's capabilities before committing to it.
People already stopped in traffic should leave shoulders open for fire engines, patrol vehicles and tow equipment. Turning around, crossing a median or following another driver through a restricted area can endanger responders and create a second incident.

What is confirmed—and what remains unknown
Confirmed as of 3:57 a.m. Tuesday: Caltrans no longer listed either the southbound fire restriction or the northbound collision lane reduction. The high-wind advisory remained in effect through the pass, and the Rose Fire had stopped growing at 25 acres.
Not yet established in the public notices reviewed: whether anyone was injured in the crash and what caused either incident. The removal of a traffic restriction should not be treated as proof that every investigation or response operation has ended.
