Two findings concern information families can check
Kern County’s 2025–26 Grand Jury reviewed the school-nutrition system operating across 53 districts. Two of its six findings concern public information: some districts did not post current lunch menus, and not every district website carried a current local wellness plan.
The jury recommended memoranda to nutrition supervisors and schools by August 1, 2026. A memo is an administrative output; the measurable result is whether each district’s current menu and wellness plan can actually be found after that date.
| Measure | Record |
|---|---|
| Districts under KCSOS | 53 |
| Grand-jury findings | 6 |
| Recommendations | 4 |
| Website-disclosure findings | 2 |
The report did not describe unsafe cafeterias
The same review said the kitchens and cafeterias visited appeared clean and well organized. It also found that food handlers and managers must be certified and that districts follow federal nutrition guidelines.
That counterevidence matters. Missing website material limits parent access to information, but it does not establish that the meals were unsafe or nutritionally deficient.
The sample does not produce a countywide failure rate
The jury toured several cafeterias and interviewed education and nutrition staff, but the public report does not identify a statistical sample or count how many of the 53 districts lacked each item. A percentage would therefore be invented rather than measured.
The most useful follow-up is a district-by-district disclosure check, paired with dates showing whether menus are current. That would turn a qualitative recommendation into an auditable public ledger.
Method and limits
What’s the Scoop With Broach classified each finding and recommendation in the official report and separated public-disclosure issues from food-safety observations. The newsroom did not visit cafeterias or independently inspect meals.
The report reflects conditions observed during the grand jury’s inquiry. It does not prove that a district missing information at that time remains out of compliance today.
