The amendment is four times the original award

The Kern County Sheriff's Office is asking supervisors to approve a retroactive amendment to its 2026 Drug Enforcement Administration domestic cannabis-eradication agreement. The change adds $40,000 to an original $10,000 authorization, bringing total federal reimbursement to $50,000.

That means 80% of the agreement's final value arrives through Amendment 1. The added amount is four times the original award, even though the performance period remains June 30, 2026 through September 30, 2027.

The paperwork is retroactive, but the term is unchanged

The amendment says additional federal funds became available after the original agreement was approved and treats the change as effective from the beginning of the term. Retroactivity aligns the larger ceiling with activity dating to June 30.

It does not create a longer program. The September 30, 2027 end date remains in place, and the Sheriff's letter says there is no impact on the county General Fund.

The packet prices activity without defining the output

The agreement permits reimbursement for domestic cannabis eradication and suppression work. The posted packet does not specify targeted sites, plants expected to be removed, investigations supported, overtime hours or a cost-per-operation benchmark.

Those omissions do not show that the program lacks results. They mean the board is being asked to enlarge the reimbursable ceiling without a published output measure against which the extra $40,000 can later be judged.

Method and limits

What’s the Scoop With Broach compared the original $10,000 ceiling with the $40,000 amendment and calculated each share of the $50,000 amended total. It also checked the amendment's unchanged dates against the Sheriff's board letter.

The analysis does not identify locations, people or active investigations and does not infer criminal conduct. Actual reimbursement, seizures and outcomes require later program records.
