CSUB’s Expanded The Nest Food Pantry: Fall Hours, Location and Weekly Limits

Where The Nest is and when students can shop

California State University, Bakersfield's expanded The Nest food pantry is part of the Essential Needs Resource Center at 9001 Stockdale Highway. CSUB's current center page describes the new location as in front of the Greenhouse. Students making a special trip can contact the center at enrc@csub.edu or 661-654-FOOD (3663) to confirm access and same-day availability.

The official CSUB Essential Needs account lists Fall 2026 pantry hours as 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday and Wednesday and noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday. The pantry is closed Friday. The center's separate webpage lists general office hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday; those office hours should not be confused with the narrower pantry-shopping schedule.

Who the pantry serves and what students may take

CSUB's food-security page describes The Nest as a free source of nutritious food for students facing financial hardship. 23ABC reported that the expanded pantry is open to all CSUB students. Because the university's current public page does not spell out a separate income test or document checklist, students uncertain about eligibility or what identification to bring should use the center's official contact information before visiting.

CSUB's current shopping graphic allows one pantry visit per week and up to 10 items during that visit, including no more than three hygiene products. Produce and baby items do not count toward the 10-item limit. The graphic says students must collect the weekly allowance in one visit rather than save unused items for a second trip. Selection can vary with deliveries and demand.

The center connects food access with other support

The Nest is more than a grocery shelf. CSUB lists CalFresh application assistance and a monthly food distribution held every third Monday. Its Essential Needs Resource Center also connects students with emergency housing, financial-crisis resources, grants, case management and community programs. Each program can have its own eligibility rules, so receiving pantry food does not automatically establish eligibility for every other service.

23ABC reported that the new 2,500-square-foot facility cost $2.5 million and is four times larger than the previous pantry. The station attributed an estimate of about 3,000 pounds of food distributed each week during the semester to Essential Needs director Jason Watkins. Those facility and weekly-volume figures come from the station's report; they do not appear on CSUB's current food-security page.

What CSUB’s published figures do—and do not—measure

CSUB reports more than 25,000 annual pantry visits, more than 250 food boxes distributed each month and more than 1,100 community members served monthly. A visit count is not a count of unique students: one student who shops repeatedly can generate several visits. The community figure may also encompass outreach beyond ordinary student pantry shopping, so the three figures should not be added together as if they measure separate people.

The university says the original pantry opened September 19, 2017 after a 2013 survey found that 40% of CSUB students experienced food insecurity. That percentage supplies historical context, not a current Fall 2026 prevalence estimate. A fresh rate would require a newer representative survey with its date and method disclosed.

A practical first visit

Before heading to campus, a student can check the official hours post, bring a reusable bag and contact the center about any identification or accommodation needed. At the pantry, the current limits make it useful to prioritize staple foods and hygiene items while remembering that produce and baby supplies sit outside the 10-item allowance.

Students who need support beyond the weekly shop can ask specifically about the next third-Monday distribution, CalFresh application help or an Essential Needs request. The center—not a reposted flyer—is the best source for schedule changes, inventory and program-specific eligibility.
