Bakersfield College's Panorama Summit Brings Experimental Jazz to Campus for Free

A 10th year for the campus summit

BAKERSFIELD — Bakersfield College's Panorama Creative Music Summit is scheduled for September 14 through 16, marking a decade for a program that brings contemporary artists into direct contact with students and the public.

The college jazz calendar lists an artist talk on Monday, September 14, at 1 p.m. and a concert on Wednesday, September 16, at 7 p.m. in the Simonsen Performing Arts Center's Indoor Theater. Both are advertised as free.

This year's featured act is Dolphin Hyperspace, the Los Angeles duo of saxophonist Nicole McCabe and bassist Logan Kane. Their work draws on improvisation, composition and electronic textures, giving the summit a subject that can be discussed in class and tested onstage.

Why pair a talk with a concert

An artist talk lets listeners hear how musicians describe their decisions before they hear the final performance. Students can ask about composition, technology, collaboration and professional life—areas that do not always fit into a standard recital.
