Nearly half of the reviewed packages had at least one deficiency

HUD’s inspector general reviewed 84 single-audit packages submitted between October 2025 and February 2026 for entities where HUD was the designated cognizant agency. It identified quality, data or timeliness deficiencies in 38 packages.

The ratio is 45.24%; the agency rounds it to 45%. The remaining 46 packages were not described as deficient in this desk-review summary.

The deficiencies fall into three different categories

Examples include missing or incorrect required information, Federal Audit Clearinghouse data that did not match report files, and packages submitted significantly late. The public summary does not publish a mutually exclusive count for each category.

One package may therefore have more than one problem. Adding category observations without package-level data would double-count and exaggerate the result.

No referrals is not the same as no corrective work

The OIG made no professional or enforcement referrals during April through June. It says it still followed up with audited entities, auditors, HUD and other agencies and could seek rejection of an unreliable package when warranted.

A referral is one escalation tool, not the only response. Correction requests and later engagement improvements are the appropriate follow-up measures for this quarter.

Method and limits

What’s the Scoop With Broach recalculated the published percentage and remainder and preserved HUD OIG’s express warning against generalizing to all single audits covering HUD funds. The newsroom did not inspect the 84 packages.

The data measure reporting-package quality, not the amount of misspent housing money. The public report assigns no combined questioned-cost figure to these 38 packages.
