Student discovers an unattended firearm in a stadium bathroom

CLOVIS, Calif. — An unattended firearm belonging to an off-duty law-enforcement officer was discovered Friday night inside a bathroom stall at Veterans Memorial Stadium during Buchanan High School’s season-opening football game, according to reporting from ABC30.

A Clovis parent, Tom Byas, told the station that his son found the gun and remained near the stall to keep other people away while friends went to notify police. Thousands of students, parents and other community members were gathered at the stadium at the time.

No injuries connected to the discovery were reported in the accounts available Sunday. Officials have not publicly identified the officer or the agency that employs the officer.

Clovis Unified says it is reviewing its practices

Alta Sierra Middle School addressed the incident in a statement the following day, acknowledging that the outcome could have been far worse. The statement said the district was revisiting practices that allow off-duty officers to keep possession of their service weapons at all times.

Clovis Unified said its police department is working with the officer’s employing agency to address the incident. The district did not identify that agency when asked by ABC30, and officials had not announced whether the officer would face discipline.

The officer’s ownership of the weapon and the district’s response have been reported by local news outlets, but a complete incident report and the circumstances explaining how the firearm was left behind were not publicly available as of Sunday evening.

The discovery raises urgent questions about campus safety

An unsecured gun in a crowded school venue creates an immediate danger regardless of who owns it. The student’s decision to guard the stall and alert adults prevented other people from gaining access while police responded.
