Officials warn of a severe defensive shortage
The United States military is experiencing a severe shortage of Patriot missile interceptors in Europe, exposing another major cost of President Donald Trump’s prolonged war with Iran.
A U.S. defense official in Europe described the shortage as ‘beyond critical’ in reporting by the Associated Press. A NATO official separately confirmed that American and allied inventories are low.
Patriot systems are designed to intercept high-speed missiles. They have become essential to Ukraine’s defense against Russian attacks and to American forces facing Iranian weapons in the Middle East.

Demand in two wars has strained stockpiles
The Iran war’s heavy demand for interceptors has reduced equipment available in Europe. Transfers to Ukraine have placed additional pressure on production and stockpiles.
The Pentagon and NATO publicly maintain that their forces retain sufficient readiness. However, officials told the AP that existing inventories could be overwhelmed by even a limited ballistic-missile attack on a headquarters, power plant or other critical site.
Russia is not believed to be preparing an immediate attack on NATO, but Western officials have warned that Moscow could rebuild enough capacity to pose a more direct threat before the end of the decade.
Congress needs to examine the cost of an open-ended war
American and European manufacturers are expanding production, including through a planned facility in Germany. Rebuilding inventories will take time because Patriot interceptors cannot be produced overnight.
Trump promised to keep America out of open-ended foreign wars. Instead, his Iran campaign has continued for months while weakening defenses elsewhere.
Congress should examine the administration’s strategy, missile consumption and replacement costs. Diplomacy and congressional authorization matter because presidential warfare carries consequences far beyond the battlefield where it begins.
