Trump Orders Major Expansion of Commercial Space Launches—But Environmental Oversight Matters

A target of 1,000 launches and reentries

President Trump has signed a memorandum directing federal agencies to accelerate the growth of America’s commercial space industry.

The administration wants the United States to conduct at least 1,000 launches and reentries annually by 2030. The previous year saw 178. Agencies have also been instructed to identify possible launch and reentry sites on government land, designate appropriate airspace and improve access to wireless spectrum.

Commercial spaceflight can create jobs, support scientific research and reduce the cost of reaching orbit. The administration’s goals also include returning astronauts to the moon by 2028 and beginning work on a lunar base by 2030.

Growth cannot erase public protections

The memorandum calls for streamlining environmental reviews and permitting. Launch facilities can affect nearby communities, wildlife, public land and coastal ecosystems. Faster approval cannot be allowed to mean weaker public protections.

America should invest boldly in science and space exploration, but public policy cannot become a blank check for powerful corporations. Companies benefiting from government land, infrastructure and contracts must follow strong safety and environmental standards—and the public deserves transparency about who profits.
