Fact Check: Do Photos Show Dancers at Sri Lanka’s Temple of the Tooth? No

The claim and verdict

Social posts accuse dancers of performing in revealing costumes in front of Sri Lanka's Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and use the images to allege an insult to Buddhism. The scene is fabricated. AFP matched the dancers to photographs posted after the Colombo Night Race in December 2012; the Temple of the Tooth was added to the background.

That distinction is not cosmetic. The false composite moves a commercial performance from Colombo to a major Buddhist site in Kandy, then builds outrage around an event that did not occur there.

The original setting survives in the record

The photographer's 2012 album shows the same performers, poses and costumes at the World Trade Centre area used for the Colombo racing event. Other frames and event video preserve the surrounding stage and urban setting. The photographer confirmed to AFP that the images were made at the race and that the temple background in the circulating versions was not original.

Geography provides another independent check. Kandy and Colombo are different cities, roughly 120 kilometres apart. The official temple and UNESCO records place the sacred complex in Kandy. A post that supplies no event listing, photographer record or original file cannot bridge that gap merely by placing a familiar façade behind the subjects.

A visual-forensics chain anyone can repeat

This method is stronger than relying on a single AI or manipulation detector. A detector produces a probability; a matched original with an earlier date and a documented venue explains exactly what was changed.

• Search a clear crop of the performers, not the added background, and locate the earliest dated upload.
• Compare fixed details—poses, costume folds, lighting and shadows—across the viral image and the original album.
• Check whether the supposed venue appears in wider frames or contemporary video of the same performance.
• Ask the venue or original photographer when the claim targets a real person or institution.

What the authentic photo with this article shows

The accompanying licensed photograph is a genuine 2020 view of the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. It is included as a reference for the real site, not as evidence that the dancers were there. The visible-credit language matters because using the composite again without a warning could continue the deception even inside a debunk.

The verdict is false: the dancers were photographed at the Colombo Night Race, and the temple background was inserted. Claims about an offensive performance at the Kandy shrine therefore rest on a manufactured scene.
