Claim: George Clooney said he supported New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani to help poor people but decided Mamdani’s property-tax policy had gone too far.
Verdict: False.
The quotation circulating on social media originated on a page called “The Satire Liners,” which describes its material as satire.
AFP found no legitimate interview, public statement or social-media post in which Clooney made the remarks. Searches of New York City campaign-finance records also did not show Clooney as a contributor to Mamdani’s campaign.

A real dispute does not authenticate a fake quote
There is a real dispute over New York City’s tax treatment of certain high-value properties that are not used as primary residences. A court has temporarily blocked aspects of that policy while litigation continues.
But a genuine political controversy does not make the fabricated celebrity quotation authentic. Satirical posts are often stripped of their original labels and reposted as screenshots, allowing invented statements to travel much farther than corrections.
Readers should be especially cautious when a viral quotation perfectly confirms a political narrative but lacks a video, transcript or link to the speaker’s verified account.
