Always-on programming

YouTube is expanding its Stations format beyond music artists to include creators, podcasts and media channels.

Stations are continuous, curated streams assembled from videos already published by a channel. Instead of selecting individual videos, viewers can enter an always-running feed and watch alongside other fans.

The streams include live chat, giving recorded videos some of the communal atmosphere normally associated with livestreams. YouTube says Stations recommendations can appear in Home and Search across its main and Music applications.

Opportunity and responsibility

For creators with large archives, Stations may give older videos additional exposure. Podcasts, educational channels and entertainment creators could organize themed streams without remaining on camera around the clock.

Creators should examine whether Stations generate meaningful watch time, subscribers and revenue rather than assuming continuous playback equals deeper engagement. An always-open chat can also require moderation while the creator is offline.

YouTube looks more like television

The broader shift is significant. YouTube is becoming less like a website where viewers choose individual videos and more like television—complete with programmed channels, passive viewing and shared audiences.
