What is closing—and what is staying open
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The on-ramp connecting Truxtun Avenue to westbound Westside Parkway is scheduled to close Monday, September 7, and remain closed through Monday, September 14, according to a City of Bakersfield traffic advisory reported by BakersfieldNow.
The notice applies to the westbound entrance ramp at Truxtun Avenue. It does not announce a shutdown of the full Westside Parkway, the eastbound side of the parkway or every lane of Truxtun Avenue. Drivers should read the closure narrowly and watch posted controls as they approach the interchange.
September 7 is Labor Day, so the first day may affect holiday travel as well as people working that day. The closure then continues across the following workweek, when commuter and school traffic may add pressure to nearby surface streets.

Why crews need the ramp
City officials said crews will construct new concrete barriers and install new guardrail to improve safety. The ramp work is part of a broader Truxtun Avenue pavement-rehabilitation project involving removal and replacement of asphalt, new lane markings and adjustments to street infrastructure.
The wider rehabilitation project also includes thermoplastic and green methyl methacrylate striping, work around manholes and water valves, a new median nose and adjustments to monument encasements. BakersfieldNow reports that the overall project is expected to be completed by September 20.
An expected completion date is a project target, not a guarantee that every traffic control will disappear at a particular hour. Construction schedules can change because of field conditions, equipment, weather or safety needs, so drivers should rely on signs and updated city notices near the end of the closure.

Plan for a detour, but do not trust an invented route
The city advises motorists to use alternate routes and says detours will be provided at nearby arterial streets. The public notices reviewed for this report do not name a single turn-by-turn detour, so this article will not guess which street every driver should use.
The most practical route will depend on where a trip begins and ends. Drivers can leave extra time, follow temporary signs and choose a legal route before reaching the closed ramp. Navigation apps may react slowly when a closure begins, and a suggested turn remains subject to posted restrictions and work-zone controls.
People traveling to downtown offices, medical appointments or schools should check conditions shortly before departure. A route that works during light holiday traffic may be slower during the weekday commute, especially if many drivers divert onto the same arterial street.

Work-zone safety and accountability
Traffic controls will be placed as needed, according to the city. Drivers should slow down, leave room for lane changes and avoid entering a ramp after a closure barricade is in place. Workers and other motorists should not have to absorb additional danger because someone tries to bypass a signed detour.
A useful public follow-up would identify the detour streets, any related lane restrictions, the time the ramp is expected to reopen and whether the broader September 20 completion target changes. Clear advance notice is especially important for workers who cannot easily change arrival times and for people who rely on predictable access to services.
