Levi Brown’s Family Asks Bakersfield to Remember the 17-Year-Old Beyond the Violence

A night of prayer, music and remembrance

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Family members, friends, pastors and neighbors gathered Monday night at the Dignity Health Sports Complex to remember 17-year-old Levi Jermaine Carter Brown, whose life was taken during a high school football game three days earlier.

The vigil brought together a community still processing the gunfire and panic that interrupted the August 21 game between Independence and Centennial high schools. But those who attended wanted the focus to extend beyond the circumstances of Brown’s death. They gathered to honor a young person who had goals, people who cared about him and a future that should not have ended at 17.

Prayer and music filled the gathering as loved ones asked Bakersfield to remember Brown, support his family and reject the cycle of retaliation that can turn one tragedy into several more.

Those who knew Brown remember his potential

Manuel Carrizalez, founder and director of Stay Focused Ministries, told 23ABC that he knew Brown through the organization’s work mentoring teenagers. Carrizalez described him as a young person with goals who was thinking about his future.

Carrizalez said the most important response to youth gang involvement is connection: parents maintaining relationships with their children, mentors continuing to show up and young people being helped to see possibilities beyond the streets.

That message matters because labels can quickly replace a person after a violent death. Brown was not merely a name in a police report. He was a teenager known by family members, coaches, mentors and friends, and his loved ones are now carrying a loss that no arrest can undo.

The criminal investigation continues

Bakersfield police have said Brown’s shooting was gang-related and followed a fight involving a group of people. Investigators arrested a 15-year-old boy on suspicion of murder and participation in a criminal street gang. Because the suspect is a juvenile, police have not publicly identified him.

Police said Brown and the suspect knew one another and that the shooting was not random. Those statements describe the investigation and allegations; the juvenile suspect has not been convicted, and authorities have not publicly released the full evidence or established a motive in court.

On Monday, police also announced six additional arrests made during efforts to prevent possible retaliatory gang violence. The department said those arrests were not directly connected to Brown’s homicide. That distinction is important as the investigation develops.

A call to stop retaliation before another family grieves

The vigil’s message was not limited to mourning. Organizers and community leaders urged Bakersfield residents to continue supporting young people before they become involved in violence—and to prevent anger over Brown’s death from producing another shooting.

Alberto Bello, lead pastor of Collective Church and an organizer of the gathering, emphasized the strength that comes when families and communities work together. Healing cannot depend only on police action after a life is lost. It also requires mentorship, accessible activities, mental-health support, conflict intervention and adults willing to stay present in young people’s lives.

Bakersfield must be able to hold two truths at once: accountability is necessary for the person responsible for Brown’s death, and prevention requires more than arrests. A community that wants fewer funerals must invest in young people long before a crisis reaches a football stadium.

Remembering a life, not only a headline

Levi Brown’s family is asking the community to remember the 17-year-old whose life was lost—not simply the violent act that made his name public.

The most respectful response is to resist speculation, allow the investigation and court process to establish the facts, and keep attention on the people living with the consequences. Brown’s loved ones deserve compassion. Students and families who witnessed the shooting deserve support. Bakersfield’s young people deserve safe places to gather and real reasons to believe in their futures.
