BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The Kern County District Attorney's Office says it is re-examining a 2021 Bakersfield internet sting involving Bryant Moreland, the former YouTube personality known as EDP445, after statements he made in a recently released documentary drew renewed attention.

“We are re-examining the case in light of the statements made by the suspect in the documentary,” the office told BakersfieldNow. That is the confirmed action. The report does not identify a new criminal complaint, arrest warrant, court date or charging decision connected to the sting.

The distinction matters because viral descriptions saying the case has been reopened can sound as though a prosecution already exists. A prosecutor can review old and new information without filing a case, and the decision to examine evidence does not establish guilt.

What happened in 2021—and why the evidence was disputed

The April 2021 operation was conducted by internet personalities using a decoy whom Moreland allegedly believed was a 13-year-old girl. There was no actual child. Video later showed Moreland arriving at a Bakersfield apartment complex and being confronted by the group, while screenshots circulated online as purported messages from the exchange.

Moreland was never charged in connection with that operation. BakersfieldNow reported that the district attorney sought additional information in January 2022, but the material was not resubmitted; the Kern County Sheriff's Office previously said investigators lacked sufficient evidence or cooperation from the people involved.

Those problems do not prove that every allegation was false, and internet popularity does not cure them. Police and prosecutors must establish who created a message, preserve original files and metadata, document an evidence chain and determine whether statements were voluntary and legally usable.

The documentary created new questions, not a verdict

The documentary, The Sick Mind of EDP445, revisits the sting and includes an interview in which Moreland responds affirmatively when Chris Hansen asks whether he had been trying to have sex with a 13-year-old. It also presents additional claims and materials that the filmmaker attributes to Moreland.

A recorded statement can be significant, but prosecutors still must assess context, authenticity, jurisdiction, corroboration and the elements and filing deadlines of any possible offense. This report is not reproducing alleged explicit images or identifying any minor discussed in the film.

The sheriff's office told BakersfieldNow it was aware of the documentary but was not actively investigating unless additional information became available.
