A public welcome on the Panorama campus
BAKERSFIELD — Community leaders, local officials and college administrators gathered September 2 at Bakersfield College's Renegade Event Center for a reception formally introducing President Dr. Stacy Pfluger to Kern County. The program also presented the college's 2026–27 President's Scholars.
Kern Community College District interim chancellor Sean Hancock praised Pfluger's collaborative style and focus on students. The reception included a display of presidential history, music by the BC Jazz ensemble, the Chamber Singers and a demonstration by the Industrial Automation program's G1 robot.
Leadership is tested after the reception
A reception can explain how a new leader wants to be understood, but governance happens through budgets, staffing, academic programs, labor relationships and board action. The president works within a district structure and state system rather than exercising unlimited authority over every campus decision.
Students will feel leadership through course availability, advising, financial-aid processing, basic-needs support, transfer pathways and campus climate. Employees will watch hiring, communication and shared governance. Community partners will look for whether workforce promises are matched by accessible programs and verified results.
What students should watch
The President's Scholars recognition gives students deserved visibility, yet one cohort cannot represent the experience of the whole enrollment. Completion and transfer data, student surveys, disaggregated outcomes and transparent budgets will provide a broader basis for judging the administration over time.
